‘Matrescence’ by Lucy Jones. A landmark, modern text on the concept itself—blending neuroscience, sociology, ecology and memoir. It reframes motherhood as a profound developmental transition, similar to adolescence. View on Amazon.
‘Inferno: A Memoir of Motherhood and Madness’ by Catherine Cho. A powerful exploration of psychosis and motherhood, at once intensely personal, yet holding within it a universal experience - of how we love, live and understand ourselves in relation to each other. View on Amazon.
‘What No One Tells You’ by Alexandra Sacks & Catherine Birndorf. Written by a psychiatrist who helped popularise matrescence, this is a practical emotional guide to pregnancy and early motherhood. Hugely validating and accessible. View on Amazon.
‘Mama Rising’ by Amy Taylor-Kabbaz. A more spiritual, identity-focused take on matrescence. Often described as the book that “names the shift” for many mothers. View on Amazon.
‘The Birth of a Mother’ by Daniel N. Stern & Nadia Bruschweiler-Stern. A foundational text explaining how a mother is “born” psychologically alongside the baby, central to understanding matrescence. View on Amazon.
‘To Have and to Hold’ by Molly Millwood. Explores how matrescence reshapes relationships, identity, and partnership—especially useful for modern parenthood dynamics. View on Amazon.
‘Motherkind’ by Zoe Blaskey (audiobook). Based on years of research, proven transformational coaching tools, world-leading expertise from hundreds of podcast guests and real-life stories from the Motherkind community, this is a validating, judgement-free book. View on Amazon.
‘Mother Brain’ by Chelsea Conaboy. Explores the neurological transformation of motherhood—great for understanding the biological side of matrescence. View on Amazon.
